Farmers Weekly – Mecmar Drier Gets More Versatile

MecmarEarlier this week Mecmar attended the UK Grain 2011 exhibition at the East of England Showground at Peterborough. The event was a good opportunity to showcase our latest improvements to our range of mobile grain driers. It was also an opportunity for Farmers Weekly to have a chat with Stewart regarding the latest tweaks to our automatic systems.

Below is the short article produced by Farmers Weekly, look out for it in one of the upcoming issues.

“One of the biggest trends in mobile driers has been the move to automated control system that mean they can largely be left on their own to get on with the job. However farmers often want to still retain some ability to make changes even when an automatic system is working.  Continue reading ‘Farmers Weekly – Mecmar Drier Gets More Versatile’

Grain driers, noise and planning permission

If you have tried to build a new grain store in recent years you will know of the passion and zeal that local planning authorities jump on proposed grain store construction. The assumption appears to be, grain storage and drying capacity means increased HGV activity and increased noise nuisance, although in many situations the opposite is in fact the case.

Many new grain stores are designed to minimise HGV trips. Reduced transport costs are often a driver for investing in such facilities. Furthermore, investment in new drying equipment with electric drive and centrifugal impeller fans significantly reduce noise nuisance. Finally, if incorporated into a new grain store the noise nuisance can be confined to one site and managed through the design process and noise mitigation measures if required.  Continue reading ‘Grain driers, noise and planning permission’

Electric three phase drive for Mecmar mobile grain driers

Following a fantastic LAMMA ’11 Show, of which I will write more in due course, there are many questions regarding the costs associated with electric driven mobile grain driers. What is the cost of installation? How much do they cost to operate? I have found two useful online tools that may help more accurately determine the costs relating to electric driven grain driers. Mecmar grain driers offer reliable return on investment

Below is a short piece of editorial for an upcoming LAMMA preview in the Farmers Guide. In this current period of healthy grain prices I believe careful thought must be given to the economic performance of an investment in grain drying capacity over its entire operational life. The length of a driers operational life has the most significant impact upon its return on investment.

Many factors will affect the price of wheat over the coming months. The unpredictable affects of weather on global crop production and quality impact upon global supply and demand balances. These then influence government decisions on trade interventions, the primary cause of the recent upturn in the grain market.

Why Mecmar use Riello industrial oil burners

It is widely recognised that the burner is one of the most critical components on a grain drier. It is crucial in terms of safety, performance and reliability. Mecmar has always specified Riello burners for all oil-fired grain driers. The entire range of Mecmar grain driers utilise the Riello RL series, from the RL50 on the Super 7 to the RL190 on the F60.

Riello Group has been manufacturing burners since the 1920s and today is the world leader in the production of burners for the heating industry. They invest heavily in product innovation including research centres for combustion, boilers and co-generation.  Riello is always working to set new standards in terms of efficiency, reliability and reduction in energy consumption.

The Riello RL Series is a two stage modulating burner, using a primary and secondary jet to control the level energy produced. The burners are fitted with a microprocessor-based control panel, which supplies indication of burner status and fault causes, ensuring quick and easy diagnosis of any problems. Performance is optimised through Continue reading ‘Why Mecmar use Riello industrial oil burners’

Mecmar Grain Driers building up to UK Grain

The latest edition of most agricultural magazines contain special features on grain drying and storage. Much of this has been spurred on by the popularity of UK grain, to be held 3rd November at the East of England Showground. The exhibition promises to be an excellent opportunity to examine the entire grain handling industry in one place.

As part of this build up we have been giving interviews to various publications. These have addressed a range of subjects from the most recent innovations at Mecmar to our opinions on general industry trends. We have seen articles published in both Anglia Farmer and Farmers Guide. However, the article of particular interest was produced by Continue reading ‘Mecmar Grain Driers building up to UK Grain’

New Mecmar Super Range performing strongly in UK

Many will have already seen previous posts about Mecmar’s new Super Range. Having been re-designed and extensively improved they are performing strongly on their debut season in the UK. The Super Range currently consists of a 7 and 10 tonne capacity drier.

The Super Range is a smaller variant of Mecmar’s larger capacity driers that maintains the same high levels of design and specification. This has been reflected in initial on-farm results in the UK. The driers are exceeding expectations in terms of throughput and farmers have commented on the ease of use and flexibility offered.

Below is a new slideshow presenting the Mecmar Super Range and some of the key features.

Mecmar batch grain drier productivity and performance

Nearly the entire UK area has now been harvested. The last 5% of wheat and 10% of spring barley have now, more than likely been cleared up since the most recent ADAS Harvest Report was published last Thursday. Mecmar grain driers are now hard at work around the UK with most farms getting well into the seasons drying work. At this point of the year the machine will be generally operating at its peak efficiency and maximum throughput will be achieved.

With this in mind, it seems like a good time to examine the variables that affect the productivity of a recirculating batch grain drier like the Mecmar. This post will focus on the key variables in terms of crop properties and condition that will impact the productivity of a mobile grain drier: Continue reading ‘Mecmar batch grain drier productivity and performance’

Harvest 2010 trends – The increasing batch capacity of mobile grain driers

Over the last 10 years we have seen a steady increase in the average batch capacity of Mecmar Grain Driers in Britain and Ireland. This season has really seen our D 18 T drier cement itself as the most popular machine in our range. This increase in mobile grain drier output has been demanded by farmers as a response to several drivers.

In the past, machines with a 12 tonne batch capacity were by far and away the most popular. This size grain drier matched the combine outputs of the day and were a sound option for grain management. We believe the increased demand for larger batch driers is a result of several factors: Continue reading ‘Harvest 2010 trends – The increasing batch capacity of mobile grain driers’

Harvest 2010 trends – Mecmar increasingly used as fixed continuous batch grain driers

Several trends have emerged in the grain drying industry this harvest. I will take the next few posts to reflect on these. These reflections offer an opportunity to take stock in anticipation of the rapidly approaching UK Grain exhibition in November. The most notable trend is the continued rise in popularity of using Mecmar mobile grain driers in an automated, continuous batch grain drying system. We briefly summarised this in a piece of editorial recently written for a UK Grain event supplement.

This season has seen further growth in the use of Mecmar grain driers in continuous batch drying systems. The Mecmar’s performance, reliability and durability makes it highly suited to being at the centre of high-output, automated grain drying installations.

Mecmar automation options make it possible to run continuous batches and feature a range of additional functions. The drier is also capable of controlling grain handling equipment required to fill and empty.

There is a compelling economic case for installing a Mecmar drier in this way. It is based on relatively low capital costs and the high resale value of Mecmar grain driers. Couple to this the ability to dry down from very high moisture levels in one pass, the Mecmar continuous batch system presents an economical and robust grain drying option.

Furthermore, Mecmar now provide a turnkey service for fully integrating handling systems with the grain drier.
