Mecmar Factory – Powered by the Sun

Earlier in the month a new solar panel plant was installed and turned on at the Mecmar factory, near Verona.

The up take in photovoltaic (PV) panels in the UK agriculture market looked set to be significant but recent cuts to the feed-in tariff scheme have taken the shine off the returns. In Italy the sun is in much better supply and the factory has recently installed a solar plant on its extensive roof space.

The energy generated by the panels provides power for the manufacturing plant and accompanying office space. The solar plant is part of a long-term commitment to reducing manufacturing costs while also helping the environment. Below are some pictures of the new installation.

The Mecmar grain drier factory

Mecmar has been active as a manufacturer in the agricultural industry since the 1960′s. In the early 1980′s Mecmar began to specialise in grain drying equipment. Mecmar now has the most up to date and modern grain drier manufacturing plant in the Europe following the completion of a new assembly and warehousing hall complete with additional office space.

Mecmar grain driers are specifically designed to allow rapid manufacture of any model from the extensive stock of componentry held in the factory. This allows Mecmar to deliver new driers right up to the beginning of and into the harvest period. The ability to quickly manufacture and deliver new driers to UK farms marginalises the need for farmers to compromise on specification by selecting from stock driers held in the UK as harvest nears.

The photos were taken during a trip to the factory earlier this month.

Mecmar grain driers manufacturer attains ISO 9001:2008 status

Last month it was confirmed that the manufacturer of Mecmar grain driers, Mecmar SPA, achieved the prestigious ISO 9001:2008 accreditation. Mecmar are the only mobile grain drier manufacturer to currently hold this internationally recognised certification. The ISO standard requires the implementation of quality management systems that are designed to help a company ensure the needs of customers and other stakeholders are met.

What ISO certification means

The ISO 9001:2008 accreditation is gained through putting in place manufacturing control systems which meet the high standards of the International Organisation for Standardisation. This involves stringent levels of quality management throughout the design and manufacturing process of Mecmar grain driers.

Furthermore, independent confirmation of this achievement and periodic re-assessment is co Continue reading ‘Mecmar grain driers manufacturer attains ISO 9001:2008 status’

New Mecmar grain driers website is launched

This week the new UK website for Mecmar grain driers was launched. The website has been designed for improved navigation and also to supply more information on our range of Mecmar mobile grain driers. It prominently incorporates this blog allowing access to both basic product information and the more detailed insight offered here. We hope that our customers will benefit from this greater ease of use and the more detailed level of information.

The site includes details on our drier range, it presents basic information on the range of Mecmar grain driers. Complimentary to this is the Continue reading ‘New Mecmar grain driers website is launched’

Galvanising ensures Mecmar grain driers are built to last

In my previous post I discussed the return on investment offered by on-farm grain drying. Essentially, the longer the machine operates effectively the greater the financial returns. Whilst longevity depends on many things including correct operation and regular maintenance, it is most significantly influenced by the quality of the design and engineering. Mecmar have identified the need for extensive galvanising to lengthen the operational life of its grain driers as a basic engineering requirement.

Hot dip galvanising is the process of coating steel with a thin layer of zinc. This is achieved by passing the metal through a molten bath of zinc at a temperature of around 460°C. When exposed to the atmosphere the pure zinc reacts with oxygen, forming Continue reading ‘Galvanising ensures Mecmar grain driers are built to last’

Impact of new red diesel on mobile grain driers

From 1 January 2011 diesel is changing. A new European directive will apply to the grade of gasoil that can be used in non-road mobile machinery (tractors, other agricultural equipment, forklifts and portable generators). From this date you will no longer be allowed to use gasoil with a sulphur content greater than 10ppm (parts per million). It appears that despite suggestions that grain driers will be exempt from using this new fuel there could be effects due to the fuel changeover on all mobile grain drier owners.

The new fuel will effectively be white diesel that contains a red dye but the same gasoil duty will still apply (no huge price rise). This fuel as well as having a reduced sulphur content may also contain up to 7% biodiesel. While making the new red diesel more environmentally friendly there are some potential drawbacks:  Continue reading ‘Impact of new red diesel on mobile grain driers’

Why Mecmar use Riello industrial oil burners

It is widely recognised that the burner is one of the most critical components on a grain drier. It is crucial in terms of safety, performance and reliability. Mecmar has always specified Riello burners for all oil-fired grain driers. The entire range of Mecmar grain driers utilise the Riello RL series, from the RL50 on the Super 7 to the RL190 on the F60.

Riello Group has been manufacturing burners since the 1920s and today is the world leader in the production of burners for the heating industry. They invest heavily in product innovation including research centres for combustion, boilers and co-generation.  Riello is always working to set new standards in terms of efficiency, reliability and reduction in energy consumption.

The Riello RL Series is a two stage modulating burner, using a primary and secondary jet to control the level energy produced. The burners are fitted with a microprocessor-based control panel, which supplies indication of burner status and fault causes, ensuring quick and easy diagnosis of any problems. Performance is optimised through Continue reading ‘Why Mecmar use Riello industrial oil burners’

Mecmar UK – mobile grain drier technical review

Throughout the year Mecmar organise Technical Reviews for its engineering staff and accredited service engineers from around the UK. The reviews offer an opportunity to focus on a specific aspects of the grain driers. They allow those supporting Mecmar grain driers to extend their technical knowledge and understanding. It also presents the opportunity for practical experience to be shared within the network of Mecmar engineers.

Yesterday saw the most recent technical review held at Mecmar’s main UK depot near Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Early October is a particularly good time to have a reveiw as the harvest workload is still fresh in the mind. Continue reading ‘Mecmar UK – mobile grain drier technical review’

The harvest rush on second hand mobile batch grain driers

Harvest 2010 is looking a bit gloomy at the moment, the weather forecast continues to look unpromising and 75% of UK wheat is still standing in the fields. However, the prospect that wheat prices may remain bullish in the short term is a welcome distraction (especially if Ukraine impose export quotas this week). Unfavourable weather conditions do not only cause panic buying on the international wheat market but they also cause panic buying on the (slightly smaller but no less important) UK second hand grain drier market.

Buying second hand grain driers

This combination of dreary weather forecasts and crops standing in the field drive hurried enquiries for second hand grain driers, the sole criteria being Continue reading ‘The harvest rush on second hand mobile batch grain driers’

Mecmar complete testing of the new F 60 batch grain drier

Mecmar recently completed testing the new F 60 batch grain drier. This drier is at the forefront of the movement towards high capacity continuous batch grain drying systems. The F 60 has been designed in response to greater demand for size options in large capacity batch grain driers. An automated F 60 drier offers hourly outputs comparable to continuous flow grain driers at a reduced level of capital investment while also retaining the benefits associated with recirculating batch grain driers.

The F 60 has a batch capacity of 60 tonnes (based on wheat at 20% mc and 74 kg/hal).  The model pictured is PTO driven with a Riello industrial oil burner. It incorporates Mecmar’s standard specification including Continue reading ‘Mecmar complete testing of the new F 60 batch grain drier’
